Renew or apply new? How to tell if you need DS-82 or DS-11

By Global VIP Services

Short answer

You can renew on Form DS-82 if you can send in your most recent passport, it is undamaged and was never reported lost or stolen, it was issued in the last 15 years when you were 16 or older, and it is in your current name or you can document the change. Otherwise you apply in person on Form DS-11.

Can I renew my passport on Form DS-82?

The State Department lets you renew on Form DS-82 only when every one of these is true:

  • You can submit your most recent passport with the application.
  • It has never been reported lost or stolen.
  • It is not damaged beyond normal wear and tear.
  • It was issued within the last 15 years.
  • You were 16 or older when it was issued, and it was valid for 10 years.
  • It is in your current name, or you have a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order that shows the change.

When do you have to use Form DS-11?

  • It is your first U.S. passport.
  • The applicant is under 16. Child passports cannot be renewed.
  • Your last passport was issued more than 15 years ago, or before you turned 16.
  • Your passport was lost, stolen or damaged.

DS-11 applications are made in person, and you pay the $35 acceptance fee on top of the application fee.

What if your name changed?

If your passport was issued less than a year ago, a name change or a printing error is corrected on Form DS-5504 instead.

If it was issued more than a year ago and meets the renewal rules, you renew on DS-82 and include your marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order.

Can I renew online instead?

The State Department also lets eligible adults renew online when they want routine service. If you need your passport faster than routine processing, use DS-82 with expedited service or have an expediter file it.

DS-82 and DS-11 questions

Can I renew a passport that has already expired?

Yes, as long as it was issued within the last 15 years and meets the other renewal rules. An expired passport issued more than 15 years ago needs Form DS-11.

Can I renew my child's passport?

No. Passports issued to children under 16 cannot be renewed. Each new child passport is made in person on DS-11 with both parents or guardians.

Do I have to go in person to renew?

No. If you meet every DS-82 rule, you can renew without appearing in person.
