U.S. citizens may hold a second valid passport when one is needed, for example when your main passport is at a consulate for a visa while you still need to travel. A second passport is issued with 4 years of validity.

What to bring, step by step

Complete the DS-82 application form
The passport office only accepts the DS-82 completed online. Open the online DS-82 form, fill it out fully, including travel details and emergency contact information. Review and correct your form, then print 2 copies, and sign and date it.

Authorization Letters
Complete two Authorization Letters, check the 2 option boxes you prefer, and sign and date both copies. The courier company name, Global VIP Services, at the bottom of the form must be handwritten. Hand one to the post office and the second one to us. Open the Global VIP Letter of Authorization

Your most recent passport
Submit your current valid and signed U.S. passport, undamaged and unaltered. It is returned to you together with your second passport.

Proof of identity
Clear copies, front and back, of your valid driver's license or state-issued ID.

Statement requesting a second U.S. passport
Complete and sign the statement explaining why you need a second passport, for example a visa being processed at a consulate, or travel to countries that will not admit you on a passport showing certain stamps. Open the Statement for a Second U.S. Passport and fill it out, or we provide the form in our office. A business letter from a U.S. company, with an original signature, also works.

Proof of departure
A copy of your round-trip ticket (e-ticket) issued by the travel agency or the airline. To expedite the application, your travel date must be within 2 weeks of the application date.

Photographs
2 color passport-style photos, 2 by 2 inches, on a white background: full face, fully developed, no glasses, not smiling, no shadows, both eyes open. The measurement from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead must be 1 to 1 1/4 inches. We take compliant photos in our office.

Government fee $216.87
Pay by check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State. If you would also like a passport card, the total fee is $246.87. Regular 8 to 12 week government service is $130 ($160 with a card).

Valid for 4 years. A second passport is issued with 4 years of validity. When it expires, you can renew it by submitting your current 10-year passport, the expired second passport, and the items above.
